Namunukula is the 12th highest mountain in Sri Lanka. It's not a one mountain. It is a collection of nine(9) mountains. The tallest mountain is 2036 m tall.
There are few paths to hike the mountain. But the path starting from 3rd mile post at Badulla- Passara road is the best path. If you are planning on to hike this great mountain range, here is my guide.
Dry season is the best time for your hike. So pick a date at late July or August. If you are planning to travel with your own vehicle, its fine. But the best way is public transport. I suggest you to use the Train.
Somehow you have to manage to go to Badulla. Then use a Bus to go to 3rd mile post at Badulla-Passara road. After you get off from 3rd mile post, You gonna have to hire a Three-Wheeler or wait for the Van for go to the Glen alpine State. It is the place where your journey begins. At the end of the road, there is this place with a board saying "To the Safe Place"("අාරක්ෂිත ස්ථානයට")
From here on, Your Hike starts. This is the last spot where you can find water in the dry season. So fill your all bottles.
The people there are very social and they are very kind. Just ask from someone where the trail begins. (Local guy named Sigeshwaram helped us and he took us to the starting point of the trail.)
This is the place where trail begins.
You will never lost in the jungle if you follow these columns. You can find these columns all over the way to top.
Now, Your real Hike begins. if you followed those columns correctly, You will find this Camping area in the middle of the jungle.
Now You are very close to the top. From little further, You will find another camping area with a well. Water in the well is not good for drink.
You can set up your Tent here or Go little more further. The best place is still waiting for you.
Go to the direction where I pointing my hand in the above picture.
You will find another camping area. Set up your Tent there.
And also Set up a fire. its too cold at night.
MORE
There is a statue of Buddha and Pulleyar at the other side from the well.
And also there is a Toilet in the top of the mountain.
There are no words to explain the morning view up there. If you are planing to go, make sure You spend the night up there. It will be a awesome trip.
